Flood Prepared

Prepare Yourself for Spring Flooding

If your property could be affected by potential flooding this spring, here are some steps you can take:

Install a backwater valve or sump pump- if you already have one of these devices, ensure it is in good working order.

• Put weather protection sealant around basement windows and the base of ground-level doors.

Ensure eaves and downspouts are in good working order and will direct water away from your home.

• Remove any important documents or items from your basement.

• Make plans for keeping your pets and livestock safe including plans for moving them if it becomes necessary.

• Find information on protecting your grain and securing hazardous materials.

• Check your insurance policy to ensure you have adequate coverage. Visit the Are you Protected? brochure on the Insurance Bureau of Canada's website for more information.

Prepare Yourself for Emergencies

• Is your family prepared for 72 hours. In an emergency, you will need some basic supplies. You may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. Visit www.getprepared.gc.ca for full details.
